Why I Decided to Start a Blog

I must admit that it took me ages to gather the courage to start blogging. Following the overwhelming responses from my social media Vlog where I create and share weekly videos relating to popular tax topics, I knew this information would serve a larger audience. I wanted to create a platform where I would be able to help my community build wealth by understanding the Tax Code.  In doing so, I discovered a space to do what I love most: educating small businesses and individuals about the complexities of the Tax Code. So here I’d like to share my thoughts on why I turned my love for vlogging into blogging.

To Share My CPA and Industry Knowledge with My Readers

I wanted an outlet where I could create and write content that is valuable to my readers. My journey towards becoming a CPA was far from easy. As a result, I always knew I wanted to share my experience with others. After becoming a CPA and working in Corporate America, I realized that not many individuals in my community understood the basic IRS terminology. Needless to say, this often translated to individuals and small businesses not being able to take advantage of the available resources. As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) I knew that I could bridge this gap by sharing my industry and professional knowledge with a greater audience.

To Inspire CPA Candidates to Continue to Persevere Through Their CPA Journey

I often say that taking the CPA exam was one of the most mentally challenging things I’ve ever done. As a CPA candidate, I was confronted with the fear that I would be unsuccessful at passing any given exam. While this fear never went away throughout my journey, I completed all four exams by planning accordingly and being consistent regardless of the circumstances that arose. Most importantly, I was always aware of the “Why”. I would urge other CPA candidates to decide why they are starting this journey. There will be moments throughout the exam where you may become exhausted from studying or frustrated from failing an exam (it happens). Nonetheless, having a “Why” allows you to be reminded of your end goal.

To Increase Diversity Within the Accounting/Financial Profession

Diversity is pivotal in all spaces. As an African American woman in Corporate America, I’m faced with the reality that there are few individuals who look like me. One can say that this blog was created out of my desperation to show my readers that there are people who look like me, successfully doing what I do. Even though that may not be the reason, it is still worth noting. According to the Journal of Accountancy, there are 9% of African Americans that make up the Accounting/Financial profession. More alarming, only 2% make up the CPAs within the United States. Ponder That.

To Foster a Community of Positivity and Learning

I cannot tell you how many times a day I browse the internet for answers to questions that I may already know but just need another opinion for. You too may also have moments when you need a second opinion. Like when you cannot differentiate between which business structure is best for you (Limited Liability Company or S Corporation). Or you are unsure whether purchasing a new computer for your business qualifies for a business deduction. Nevertheless, I want you to feel welcome in this space. I hope to use this blog to inform and educate you about the complexities of the Tax Code; while making it a safe place for you to ask questions and receive valuable feedback.

In closing, I hope you will SUBSCRIBE to this community of like-minded individuals and business owners as we conquer financial literacy together. We do better when we know better.
